Insoles for the heel

Heel pain can have many causes, but very often it is caused by:

  • Heel spurs
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Bursitis
  • Sever’s disease (only in children)
  • Overstrained Achilles tendon

If you suffer from any of the above, it is important that you get the right treatment and the correct insoles. ZOLES® can, through an analysis and 3D scan, identify the cause and help relieve your discomfort.

HEEL SPURS AND BURSITIS

Heel spurs

Heel spur (plantar fasciitis) is a calcium deposit on the heel bone, which has developed due to overstrain of the plantar fascia. The term is often used interchangeably with overstrain of the plantar fascia, even when no actual heel spur has formed. Typical symptoms of a heel spur:

  • Pain under or on the inside of the heel.
  • The pain is most pronounced at the beginning of walking or running. It lessens once the foot warms up but returns later.
  • You typically feel stiffness in the heel after sleeping, which gradually disappears throughout the day.

Bursitis

Between the heel bone (calcaneus) and the Achilles tendon lies a bursa, which protects the tendon from friction against the heel bone. Sometimes this bursa can become inflamed (bursitis). Symptoms of bursitis may include significant tenderness in the area at the bottom of the Achilles tendon or the back of the heel bone, which can also radiate up or down under the heel.

ZOLES’ SOLUTION

We can alleviate a heel spur and bursitis with extra cushioning under the heel and arch support. The latter is the most important for relieving the strain on the plantar fascia and reducing pain from the heel spur.

ZOLES’ SOLUTION

Achilles tendonitis can be alleviated with arch support, which reduces the strain on the calf muscle and Achilles tendon attachment caused by overpronation. We create a high heel counter and a heel pad in the insole, along with arch support. The latter is the most important for relieving the Achilles tendon and reducing the pulling pain from the tendon.

Overstrained Achilles tendon

The Achilles tendon is the tendon of the large calf muscle in the lower leg, which you can feel as a thick cord at the back of the ankle/heel bone. An overstrained Achilles tendon can result in inflammation around the tendon sheath and small tears in the tendon itself. Symptoms of Achilles tendon problems:

  • You will experience pain in the lower part of the tendon or at the back of the heel. The pain occurs when you start to use the heel actively, for example, during running.
  • The pain usually subsides after some activity, only to worsen afterward.
  • There is often pain and stiffness even when you are not moving and are at rest.

Sever's syndrome in children and teenagers

Sever’s syndrome is experienced as heel pain caused by inflammation in the growth plate of the heel bone, as it is not fully developed yet. It is felt as a pull from both the plantar fascia and the Achilles tendon during activities on hard gym floors, especially with footwear that puts a lot of pressure on the heel and lacks sufficient cushioning. It typically occurs in children and adolescents aged 11-16 and is often seen in young people who play football or engage in intensive sports on hard surfaces.

ZOLES’ SOLUTION

We address it with an increased heel drop (raising the heel), a firm heel counter, and customized arch support to relieve pressure on the heel, arch, and Achilles tendon. Over time, children typically outgrow the condition, but during this period, insoles may be necessary to alleviate discomfort and allow the child to remain active.

ZOLES’ SOLUTION

We create arch support to correct any overpronation and relieve the strain on the plantar fascia. Additionally, we raise the insole under the heel to provide optimal cushioning and relieve the area where the tendon attaches to the heel bone.

PLANTAR FASCIITIS

The plantar fascia is an essential part of the foot that absorbs impact when you move. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammatory condition that causes pain in the arch of the foot and heel. It is often confused with a heel spur, but they are not the same. If you have plantar fasciitis, you will experience pain in the arch when walking or running. The pain is located on the inside of the foot where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel. Plantar fasciitis is often seen in people who overpronate, where the foot rolls too far inward when walking or running.
