What is supination?

Supination, also called underpronation, occurs when the foot excessively rolls outward during walking or running. People with supination often have a high arch and primarily place pressure on the heel and forefoot, leading to uneven weight distribution, which stresses the foot.

In the natural gait cycle, pronation plays a key role in absorbing impact effectively. In people with supination, this mechanism is partially impaired, resulting in reduced shock absorption. The lack of shock absorption can lead to stress-related issues in the knees, hips, and lower back, especially during running and jumping.

Symptoms of supination

  • Pain on the outer side of the foot and ankle
  • Frequent ankle injuries
  • Uneven wear on shoes
  • Pain in the knees, hips, or lower back
  • General discomfort during walking or running
